Window air conditioners are sometimes called room air conditioners. It is the simplest form of air conditioning system and is installed on a window or wall. It is a single unit assembled in the case where all the components are located.
The refrigeration unit has a dual-shaft fan motor, and the fans are mounted on both sides of the motor. One is on the evaporator side and the other is on the condenser side.
The side of the evaporator faces the room for space cooling, and the side of the condenser faces the outside for heat dissipation. An insulating partition within the same enclosure separates the two sides.
Front Panel
The front panel is the panel that the user sees from the room in which it is installed and has electronic or mechanical user interface controls. Older ER units are usually the mechanical control type with knobs to control the temperature and fan speed of the air conditioner.
Newer units are equipped with electronic control systems that use remote control and a touchscreen with a digital display to control functions.
The front panel has adjustable horizontal and vertical (some models) louvers, and the direction of airflow can be adjusted to suit the comfort of the user.
If the user wishes to get a certain amount of fresh air from the outside, a fresh air inlet called VENT (ventilation) is provided on the panel.
Mechanical types are generally less expensive compared to electronic types. If you're just looking to cool a room and aren't too particular about aesthetics or added functionality, a mechanical will do just fine.
Indoor Components
The indoor components of a window air conditioner include:
- Cooling coil with the air filter. The cooling coil is where the refrigerant in the system exchanges heat with the room air.
- Fan blower is a centrifugal evaporator blower used to discharge cool air into a room.
- The capillary serves as the expansion device. If it is installed too close to the evaporator, it will generate noise during operation.
- The operation panel is used to control the temperature and speed of the fan. A thermostat is used to sense the return air temperature and another thermostat is used to monitor the temperature of the coil. The control type can be mechanical or electronic.
- Drier filter is used to remove moisture from the refrigerant.
- Drain pan is used to hold the condensate in the cooling coil and drain to the outside by gravity.
Outdoor Components
Outdoor components include:
- The compressor is used to compress the refrigerant.
- The condenser coil is used to reject the heat from the refrigeration to the outside air.
- Propeller fans are used in air-cooled condensers to help move air molecules to the surface of the condensing coil.
- The fan motor is located here. It has a dual shaft, indoor blower, and outdoor propeller fan linked together.
Operate
During operation, the thermostat is installed on the return air of the unit. This temperature is used to control the compressor on or off. Once it reaches room temperature, the compressor turns off.
Usually, it must be turned off for at least 3 minutes before being turned on again to prevent damage. For mechanical control types, the unit is usually turned on at least 3 minutes after it has been turned off. For electronic control, there is usually a timer to automatically control the cut-in and cut-out of the compressor.
The evaporator blower will draw air from the room, conditioned by the air filter and cooling coil. The conditioned air is then exhausted, sending cool and dehumidified air back into the room. This air mixes with the room air, reducing the temperature and humidity levels in the room.
Fresh air from the outside is brought in through the damper and mixed with return air from inside before passing through the air filter and cooling coil.
The air filter installed in front of the evaporator acts as a filter to keep the cooling coil clean for good heat transfer from the coil. Therefore, regular washing and cleaning of the air filter is good practice to ensure the efficient operation of the air conditioner.
