Components of a Mini-Split Air Conditioning System

A mini-split system consists of three groups: the outdoor unit, the indoor unit, and the conduits connecting them. These main parts have several small split components that work together.

A mini-split system consists of three groups: the outdoor unit, the indoor unit, and the conduits connecting them. These main parts have several small split components that work together.

1. Outdoor Compressor/Condenser Unit

The compressor or condenser unit is located outside the house. It looks like a rectangular box with a big fan. Its purpose is to release heat from the refrigerant:

Compressor: A compressor is a device that pressurizes a refrigerant gas, converting it from a hot gas to a liquid. It also pumps liquid through the refrigerant lines that lead to each indoor unit in your home.

Condenser Coil: The condenser coil goes around several circuits to give the outside air time to absorb heat from the refrigerant. After leaving the condenser, the refrigerant will become a cool liquid.

Outdoor Fan: The fan blows air across the condenser coils, ensuring they are adequately cooled.

Expansion Valve: This small valve allows the high-pressure liquid refrigerant to expand immediately before it enters the evaporator unit. This cools it down further.

Some homeowners choose mini-split systems with heat pumps. A heat pump works basically the same as an air conditioner, except that it reverses the process in cold weather. This type of ductless system draws heat from the outside air and uses it to heat the room in winter.

2. Indoor Evaporator Unit

Ductless air conditioning systems have a compressor externally connected to at least one internal evaporator unit. Depending on the unit, the compressor can support up to eight evaporators in different rooms, essentially creating a network to cool the entire house. That's it:

Evaporator Coil: Cool refrigerant flows into the evaporator coil, automatically absorbing heat from the surrounding air. This causes the refrigerant to evaporate into a gas and carry heat from the room to the outside.

Blower: A circular blower is responsible for drawing in warm air and blowing cool air back into the room. It is very quiet compared to the fans of traditional air conditioning units.

Air Filter: Cool air passes through an air filter before entering the room, trapping dust particles, pet dander, mold spores, and other allergens. A good filter can improve indoor air quality while keeping your home cool.

Evaporators are often wall mounted, but you don't have to choose that type of unit. There are floor-standing evaporators, suspended ceiling units, recessed ceiling units, and even evaporators that work with partial piping. Also, you can combine different styles for other rooms. This gives you the freedom to follow your design vision in any space.

3. Drain Pipes, Refrigerant Pipes, and Cables

There needs to be a way to transfer the hot gas from inside the compressor to the outside compressor. This is where pipeline groups come in. A line group refers specifically to refrigerant tubes but is often used to refer to an entire bundle of tubes, including:

Refrigerant Line: This insulated copper pipe carries refrigerant through the system. Pipe sizes vary; the refrigerant line leaving the evaporator coil with hot gas is wider than the refrigerant line carrying cold refrigerant liquid.

Drain Line: Any evaporator will produce water from condensation during the cooling cycle. You don't want any moisture leaking out of your home, so the drain pipes it outside.

Wires: The power wires from the outside provide all the power the indoor evaporator unit needs. That means no need to rewire your home to get the mini splitter working.

Communication Lines: Electronic control cables send signals between internal and external components to keep everything running smoothly. Outdoor compressors run only when needed, and at just the right speed to keep your home at your desired temperature.

What size catheter do I need for a mini-furcation? Usually, a 3-inch conduit works perfectly. The HVAC contractor simply punched a 3-inch hole in the exterior wall to run the necessary wiring (which was then fully sealed).

How Can Mini-split Modules Cool a Home?

Now that you understand what the mini-split components do individually, how do they work together? The cooling process is easy to understand when you know how heat transfer works. In every system, heat always wants to move to cooler areas. This is a basic principle of thermodynamics.

The hot air in your home automatically moves towards the cold refrigerant liquid in the evaporator, just as your hand loses heat when it touches ice. Externally, a compressor uses the same principle by pressurizing a warm refrigerant into a liquid that is hotter than the surrounding air, releasing the heat and cooling the liquid.

This whole process is possible thanks to the refrigerant, a special liquid with an extremely low boiling point. Even room temperature air above 60 degrees is enough to turn it from a cool liquid to a boiling gas.

Advantages of Ductless Mini-Splits

Knowing how the individual mini-split components work can help you choose the right type of cooling for your home. Seeing how amazing a mini-split system is compared to central air conditioning may convince you to bring your home into the 21st century!

Energy Efficiency: This type of system reigns supreme when it comes to energy efficiency. Cooling costs can be reduced by up to 30% compared to central and older air conditioners. This saves you a lot of electricity and money.

Zone Cooling: mini-splits allow you to adjust the temperature in different rooms independently. This is called zone cooling. Trust us when we say this is the air conditioner of the future. Why is waste electricity cooling your kitchen if you're not there?

Smart Thermostat Option: Many mini splits have a smart thermostat feature that you can control from your smartphone or tablet. You no longer have to get up to warm or cool the room. The best part is that you can personalize your bedroom to your sleeping preferences. Enjoy a good night's sleep throughout the night and never feel too cold or too hot.

Simple Installation: Adding a mini-split to your home is relatively simple because no complicated plumbing needs to be installed. It Installs faster and costs less because you only need that 3" conduit hole.
