8 Free Ways to Improve Air Conditioning Efficiency

time2022/05/07

Air conditioning is a part of a home's largest energy bill. As the weather warms, we've put together a list of easy, no-cost ways to improve the efficiency of your air conditioner in your home to help you get the most out of your system while keeping your expenses in check.

According to the Department of Energy, heating and cooling bills can account for more than half of your total utility bill. This makes the use of central air conditioning a part of a home's largest energy bill.

As the weather warms, we've put together a list of easy, no-cost ways to improve the efficiency of your air conditioner in your home to help you get the most out of your system while keeping your expenses in check.

1. Clean around the outdoor condenser

The air conditioner condenser is an important part of the air conditioner and plays a very important role in the operation of the air conditioner. Scale is easy to appear in the condenser of the air conditioner, and the cleaning method is also very simple. You can dilute the baking soda or white vinegar and pour it into the condenser of the air conditioner, and then rinse it with water.

2. Vacuum indoor vents and keep them clear

You can suck dust and any debris away from the indoor vents to help maintain a steady airflow in the system. Also, keep items such as blinds, furniture, and toys out of the vents.

3. Raise the thermostat a few degrees

Typically, adjusting the temperature to 5 - 8 degrees (lower in winter and higher in summer) can help save money and energy. With a programmable thermostat, you can automatically adjust the temperature at different times of the day, or during the hours you'll be away from home.

4. Keep lights and other heat-generating devices away from the thermostat

Placing heat-generating devices near your thermostat will tell it the air in your home needs more cooling, causing the system to run longer and work harder.

5. Close curtains and blinds in hot weather

Keeping curtains or blinds closed when sunlight hits the windows of your home can prevent some of the heat from warming the interior of your home.

6. Clean the drain

Indoor cooling coils have a drain and are usually installed above the stove in the basement. If you flush a cup of chlorine bleach down the air conditioner drain and flush it with a gallon of water, you can keep the drain open all summer. If the drain is clogged, keeping the drain open can prevent flooding in the basement.

7. Avoid using the dryer and oven during the hottest part of the day

Running the dryer causes warm air to be drawn into the home, and using the oven adds extra warm air to the home, causing the air conditioner to have to work harder.

8. Isolate any exposed plumbing

Make sure the ductwork running through the unconditioned space is properly sealed to avoid leaking any conditioned air. You can fix visual leaks with a UL 181 rated dedicated duct sealant tape, but make sure a professional also checks the ductwork during your next scheduled maintenance visit. It is also recommended to insulate your ductwork with an appropriate thickness of duct insulation.

You don't always have to spend a lot of money to maintain the investment you've made in a central air conditioning system. Knowing the different parts of your HVAC system and keeping it running efficiently will keep your system in top working order this summer when you need it most.

We recommend using the helpful tips above along with regular maintenance to save money and reduce the chance of problems with your system. If you still have questions or want to buy an air conditioner, please contact us.
